This town hall is hosted by the Community for Just Schools Fund and  will include several questions that highlight the Commission’s flawed narrative and rationale as well as several questions that highlight CJSF’s partners’ work as framed in Do the Harder Work: Create Cultures of Connectedness in Schools.

Question #1 (#Q1): The Fed Commission on School Safety recommended rescinding the 2014 Fed School Discipline Guidance. What has been the significance of the guidance document to you in your efforts to push for safe & supportive schools and an end to racial bias in discipline? #DoTheWork #YouthDemand #JustSchools

Question #2 (#Q2): In their final report, the Fed Commission on School Safety recommended the ‘hardening’ of schools by increasing the presence of police officers and supporting armed teachers. How do these recs miss the mark and make schools less safe? #DoTheWork #YouthDemand #JustSchools

Question #3: (#Q3): According to the @usdoegov civil rights data, 1.6M students attend a school with a cop on campus but not a counselor. Yet the Fed Commission on School Safety did not call for an increase in counselors or mental health professionals. Why is it essential that we invest in mental and emotional health supports in schools, and not more police? #DoTheWork #YouthDemand #JustSchools

Question #4 (#Q4): Why is it important that we create space and opportunities for relationship building in schools to address school safety? #DoTheWork #YouthDemand #JustSchools

Question #5 (#Q5): Why is it important that we genuinely engage youth, parents, educators, and communities to make recommendations for school safety that prioritizes their emotional and physical safety and well-being? #DoTheWork #YouthDemand #JustSchools

Question #6 (#Q6): Earlier this month, we released “Do the Harder Work: Create Cultures of Connectedness in Schools” includes What should be the next action step for Members of Congress, school districts, and education stakeholders to address school safety without criminalizing Black & Brown students, girls of color and LGBTQ+ youth, and students with disabilities?
